Species: Mutant
Alignment: X-Men
Face Claim: Kodi Smit-McPhee
History / Bio:
Kurt Wagner was abandoned as a newborn in southern Germany. He was left swaddled in an expensive blanket in one of the wagons of a traveling circus. In the morning his cries drew the attention of the people who worked and lived with the circus and he was taken in by the fortune teller, a woman named Margali Szardos. His appearance was shocking-- monstrous even-- and the cruel owner of the circus put Kurt on display right away in his freak show as the son of the Devil himself. Kurt drew a large crowd and so he was permitted to stay.
He grew up in the circus. As he got older, his unique physiology gave way to a great talent with acrobatics. Now he was billed as the Nightcrawler, a demon child who could perform amazing feats. Those who came to see him mostly assumed that his appearance was due to makeup or a costume. The people who worked the circus were kind to Kurt, for the most part. They were his family. The circus traveled all around Europe and Kurt learned many languages and skills as he grew.
As Kurt grew older, he learned that he was a mutant, and as such he was not welcome by many. When he was a teenager, the circus traveled through a small town and stopped overnight due to a heavy snow that had fallen. Kurt went with a few other performers to get some food at an inn, but they were chased out by the angry, superstitious villagers. Kurt was cornered in an alley, but teleported away from them before he could be badly hurt. It was the first time he had ever teleported and the entire experience terrified him. He ended up in a small church, hiding in the rafters, ashamed and afraid. In the morning he was found by the priest, who was kind to him. He fed Kurt and didn't seem to be afraid of him. When Kurt asked, the Priest explained simply that he was a child of God, like everyone else, and it was his duty to care for him. Kurt hung around the church for a few days, reading and asking questions and eventually converting to the faith. The circus had moved on and Kurt knew he had to leave soon if he was going to catch up. The priest gave him a bible, a rosary, and a blessing. Kurt returned to the Circus and embraced his faith.
As time wore on, it became harder and harder to draw a crowd. When Kurt was 19, the evil man who owned the circus sold Kurt into an underground mutant fighting ring. Kurt was snatched from his hammock in the middle of the night and electrocuted with cattle prods until he passed out. When he woke up he was being dragged through a hallway and out into a frenzied crowd of people. He was shoved into a cage and forced to fight against mutants like himself. The crowd didn't like Kurt very much, as he did more teleporting and dodging than actual fighting. They began to boo and call for his death. Kurt looked out at the sea of faces and understood that he was going to die.
Then the lights went out. Chaos followed. The door of the cage was wrenched open and someone was taking him by the hand, pulling him through the crowd. Once they were out the door the woman turned to him and ordered him to teleport them away. He took them to a rooftop a few streets over and his savior explained that he was free to go. Kurt, still wearing the clownish uniform of the circus, had spread his strange hands and replied that he had no where to go.
She took him to Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters and directed him to the front door without going in herself. Kurt asked again for her name, so that he may pray for her, but she refused to give it. In the end, she left, and Kurt joined the X-Men.

There was a small chapel at the School. It was nondescript, with a few pews that faced a small stained glass window that depicted something like a sun burst. There was a shelf with a variety of books that represented a good number of the world's religions. It wasn't a place where any structured worship ever took place, but it was quiet, and Kurt liked the shadowy peace it had to offer.
He went there every morning. He prayed for his friends and their safety. He prayed for the Professor. He prayed for their enemies. He prayed for the woman who had saved him from the cage. He prayed for the circus family he had left behind. Protection, blessings, peace. These were the things he asked for.
He was dutifully working through the rosary when he heard voices echoing down the hall, followed by the unmistakable laughter of children and the hushed whispers of others trying to be quiet. Kurt smiled, recognizing the voices as they drew closer. He turned to look over his shoulder just as they reached the chapel: three young ones in their first year of study, perhaps 11 or 12. They were new to their power and far from home. Each of them held a few apples in their hands and a hopeful smile on their face.
They wanted to continue their lessons on juggling.
Kurt couldn't say no. He pocketed his rosary and stood. "I see you have raided the kitchens. Vell, let us hurry before breakfast starts, no?" He followed them outside, feeling a comfortable peace within him that he had not felt in a very, very long time.
This was home now.

Strengths / Abilities / Powers:
- Teleportation - Kurt is able to teleport himself, anything he is wearing or holding, and within limits additional mass (such as another person). He does this by stepping into the Brimstone Dimension, moving through it, and stepping back into his own dimension. This process happens so quickly he is not really aware of the Brimstone Dimension as he passes through it. When he teleports it makes a soft "BAMF" noise and leaves behind a small cloud of blue smoke and the faint scent of brimstone.
- Unique Physiology - Kurt has an elongated spine, flexible bone structure, and a unique musculature that gives him the ability to perform on the level of an olympic gymnast. Because of the unique structure of his legs, he is more comfortable crouching rather than standing upright.
- Prehensile Tale - Kurt's tail is strong enough to not only sport his own weight but lift an adult man off the ground. It is flexible enough that it is often easier for him to manipulate objects with his tail rather than his hands.
- Night Vision - Kurt has highly evolved yellow eyes that allow him to see as well as a cat at night.
- Fencing - Kurt learned this skill from a master fencer in the circus. He is quite good and loves to handle the swords, even with his tail.
- Faith - Kurt is a devout Catholic. He carries a rosary and a well-worn tiny german-language bible on his person most of the time. It is his faith that helps him process the horrors of the world around him and keep going.
- Kurt is fluent in German, English, French, Spanish, and Italian.
Weaknesses:
- Limits to Teleportation - Kurt can only travel about three miles at a time with each teleport. He has to be able to see where he is going or have been in that space before he jumps, otherwise he runs the risk of porting into solid matter. This would be a very deadly mistake. If Kurt pushes his limits on distance or mass carried he runs the risk of passing out or worse when he re-enters his dimension. Those that travel with Kurt experience fatigue from the experience and Kurt sometimes uses this as a way to confuse enemies.
- Demonic Appearance - Kurt's is not a face one can easily forget. It is difficult for him to even go out in public without causing a stir, particularly now a days. He cannot blend in with 'normal' people and many who do not know him are afraid of him.
- Loneliness - Because he has been harshly discriminated against for the majority of his life, Kurt is often alone. It is one of the reasons why he is so attached to his faith. When there is no one else, he can always talk to God. That said, he has a love for people and is eager to make friends and prove himself.
- Unknown Heritage - Kurt was abandoned as a child and his Circus Family never tried to hide that fact from him. As a child, Kurt would think about this and sometimes cry. Obviously they left him because he was ugly and blue. Over the years, he thinks about this less and less. He does not have a family of his own, which is why the friends he has made with the X-Men mean so much to him.
- Neyaphem - Kurt is a member of the Neyaphem, an ancient race of mutants of demonic appearance. Because of this, the blood of a Cheyarafim (long-lived, winged mutants with the ability to heal and the Neyaphem's ancient enemies) would be poisonous to Kurt. It is said that Cheyarafim have died out, but the mutant Angel is very similar. His blood has been used to heal mutants, but only make the wounds worse for Kurt.
