History / Bio:
James Buchanan Barnes was born in 1925. With a family consisting of a younger sister and their parents, Bucky’s young life was fairly typical of a child born in those days. He and a boy called Steve Rogers, a boy who would eventually go on to become Captain America, were close friends; Bucky’s father was in the Army, and Steve’s mother was a nurse at Camp LeHigh. When Bucky’s mother died in 1935, however, things started to change for the boy. He started to get into more fights, and each time he promised his father that he wouldn’t, that he would stop. But each time, he managed to break that promise.
It was after one such fight that his father told him to go to his room, that he’d talk to him when he got back. But his father never came back from his maneuvers with the Army that day. There had been an accident that had killed the older Barnes, leaving Bucky and his little sister Rebecca as orphans.
It was arranged so that Rebecca would go to boarding school while Bucky would stay on at Camp LeHigh, where he became something of a mascot for the older soldiers. He was able to stay friends with Steve, who would spend a lot of time hanging around the base, despite how sick he was, because he wanted to be a soldier. As Bucky grew up on the base, he continued to get into fights, something which allowed him to become a better fighter as the years wore on.
The year that he was set to turn sixteen, he got into a fight in a bar with several other men and was arrested. They put him in the brig at Camp LeHigh, to wait for his punishment. Instead, the general told him that he was going to be sent off for a special assignment. They had seen what an excellent natural fighter he was, and they wanted to hone those skills.
When Bucky turned sixteen, the Army sent him overseas, to train in England with the S.A.S. It was while he was in England that he first saw Captain America in newsreels. He went to the cinema every night to see more of them, so that he could study the Captain’s every move.
After several months of extensive training, he was sent on a special mission, which turned out to be heading back to Camp LeHigh. There were a few more weeks of training and evaluation before he was asked to demonstrate his skills, what he’d learned.
He fought and knocked out several soldiers all at once, only to discover that the general who had recommended him for the S.A.S. training was watching him, along with another man, the man known as Captain America, but who Bucky knew as his childhood friend, Steve Rogers. They wanted someone to represent the youth of America, to combat the image of the Hitler Youth movement, and Bucky had been chosen and trained to be Captain America’s partner.
The two of them fought alongside The Invaders, a group consisting of Namor the Sub-Mariner, the Human Torch and his sidekick Toro. Though Bucky was the only normal human among them, he managed to hold his own fighting with them. Throughout World War II, they fought the Nazis, and Bucky was able to use his skills at stealth and espionage to aid the group, as well as his expert marksmanship.
In April of 1945, towards the end of the war, Captain America and Bucky were sent to an island in the English Channel, to stop Baron Zemo from launching a drone that could devastate the Allies’ war effort. Cap and Bucky both climbed onto the plane to try to disable it, and they succeeded, but not before it exploded. Bucky’s left arm was blown off and he was thrown into the icy waters of the English Channel.
Just a month later, his body was discovered in the ice by Red Room scientists. They realized the potential value that he could have, and they resurrected him. After extensive testing, they discovered that there was no super soldier serum present in his body, which was what they had been hoping for. Hoping that they would find a use for him eventually, the scientists put him back into stasis.
It was nine years before he was brought out of stasis. The Red Room scientists did more testing, discovering that he had very few memories beyond those of his muscle-memories, beyond his training. Now and then, he would have flashes of someone, a tall blonde man with a star, but they didn’t make any sense. It wouldn’t matter anyway; the man who used to be Bucky Barnes was fitted with a cybernetic left arm, to replace the one that had been blown off, and he was reprogrammed to be the Winter Soldier.
The first field test of the Red Room’s new weapon didn’t occur until November of that year. The Winter Soldier was given the directive to assassinate three soldiers, which he did via a Jeep explosion before returning to his handlers.
For three years, they used the Winter Soldier to deal with their enemies, sending him on missions to infiltrate, as well as assassinate. During this time, he also helped to train the Black Widow candidates. In February of 1957, the Winter Soldier went on his first mission on United States soil. It was because of this mission that his handlers decided to evaluate him for potential instability. After his evaluation, it was decided that the Winter Soldier would be kept in stasis between missions.
The Winter Soldier was brought out of stasis very briefly in November of 1963, to perform an assassination that would shock the world. His handlers sent him to Dallas, Texas, where he was responsible for the shooting of the 35th President of the United States. As soon as that mission was done, he was put back into stasis.
Almost ten years went by before Codename: Winter Soldier was brought out of stasis. In March of 1973, on another mission to the United States, the Winter Soldier did not return to his handlers. He eliminated the target he’d been sent to take out, but after that, he wandered around the city, confused and aimless, until he was picked up by three Red Room agents who were disguised as policemen. The Winter Soldier didn’t have any answers for his conduct or any memory of his time out of control.
After completely wiping and reprogramming him, the Winter Soldier was put into stasis once more.
In September of 1983, General Vasily Karpov, one of the original members of the Red Room and a proponent of the Winter Soldier program, took the Winter Soldier with him to the Middle East, to act as his personal bodyguard, which he did for five years. After Karpov’s death in 1988, the Winter Soldier was put into stasis for what appeared to be the foreseeable future. But a few years later, he performed one last mission, that of killing Howard and Maria Stark, before he was decommissioned and put into stasis indefinitely.
Now, the Winter Soldier has been brought out of stasis once more, to wreak havoc on the world that is still reeling from the new-found knowledge that regular people aren’t the only ones out there.
Strengths / Abilities / Powers:

Miscellaneous: The motorcycle that he usually rides is an Indian.

Codename: Winter Soldier was on a mission. He was to infiltrate enemy headquarters by going undercover as a new recruit, steal the information that his handlers had indicated, and then, he was to do what he did best and assassinate the leaders. It would be a simple mission, the sort of mission he’d completed many times before.
He slipped into the uniform his handlers had provided, taking a moment to study the identity that he would be using to gain access to the organization. As soon as the uniform was completely on, he slipped into his newest character and headed to enemy headquarters.
<“State your name and your business,”> the guard at the door commanded.
<“I’m Pyotr; I’m the newest recruit,”> the Winter Soldier stammered, pulling a nervous expression onto his face. In reality, he hadn’t felt nervous since…..well, he couldn’t really remember ever feeling nervous. He didn’t really have feelings, but that was beside the point; he was a weapon, and they weren’t something he needed.
The guard studied him for a moment, then opened the door to allow him to pass through.
<“Thanks,”> the Winter Soldier murmured, stepping through the door and starting slightly as it closed behind him. They were expecting a new recruit, yes, but they certainly weren’t expecting him. He was far more trained than any of their recruits ever would be, and this mission was going to be simplicity itself.
<“You are to go up the stairs and wait in the first room on the left,”> the guard instructed him.
The Winter Soldier nodded, heading up the stairs on silent feet; they were playing right into his hands.

Strengths / Abilities / Powers:
- Tin Soldier:
- Superhuman Strength: There is some degree of superhuman strength in the cybernetic left arm, which means that he can use it to do things that other humans can’t. For example, he could punch through certain types of walls (drywall, framing walls, etc, and he could eventually work his way through something like brick) without denting or injuring himself. Additionally, he can perform delicate, dexterous motions with his left hand, the way a normal person would be able to.
- Sensors: There are various sensors in Bucky’s arm. Through these, he is able to throw items with accuracy, pass through metal detectors without setting them off, and control his arm even when it’s detached from him. The sensors can also keep other metallic objects from being detected by a metal detector, within a limited range.
- EMP: The arm is equipped with the ability to discharge EMPs, which renders electronic devices useless. When it’s used, it takes a little while to recharge, but it’s very useful when he’s trying to infiltrate areas he hasn’t had a chance to completely survey.
- Ready! Aim! Fire!: Able to hit his target with almost pinpoint accuracy, the Winter Soldier is one of the best marksmen around. He’s skilled with various long-range weapons, as well as throwing knives.
- Acrobat: Through his many years of training, Bucky has developed an ability to perform many acrobatic feats that rival the level of Olympic gymnasts. This agility allows him to better be able to avoid attacks and move through battlefields, if he needs to.
- Disposable Heroes: Bucky’s a master in various martial arts, as well as other hand-to-hand fighting styles, including but not limited to boxing, Judo, karate, and aikido. He’s been involved in several wars, and he’s able to use that experiences to his advantage when it comes to planning, strategizing, etc.
- Stronger: He has worked very hard to strengthen himself to the highest level he can be. His strength and agility is equal to that of an Olympic-level gymnast, though it is not superhuman.
- Espionage: During World War II, Bucky was one of the soldiers that was sent ahead to scout the area due to his ability to keep himself hidden. He’s an expert in stealth an concealment, which is why people who know of him at all refer to him as a ghost and a legend; he’s practically a ghost.
- Silver Tongue: He’s fluent in English, Russian, German, Japanese, and French. There are other languages in which he can get by, thanks to his background, and he’s able to pick up new languages fairly quickly.
- Secret Agent Man: Even before he became the Winter Soldier, Bucky was an expert spy. He was trained in stealth, survival, demolitions, and reading people. Additionally, when he’s given an undercover mission, he’s able to slip into the persona that he is given in order to completely his mission pretty much flawlessly.
- Bullet With A Name: He has mastered several different ways of silently taking out his enemies, whether it’s with a bladed weapon, some sort of garrote, or his bare hands. He has assassinated a large number of people in his time as the Winter Soldier, and SHIELD has only recently started to be able to trace his hits back to him.
- Every Step You Take: In addition to being a master at stealth, he’s also an equally adept tracker, which allows him to find and follow his targets just about anywhere. He’s very intelligent, and he uses that intelligence to his advantage, constantly surveying and adapting to his surroundings, as well as mapping out potential weak points and escape routes.
Weaknesses:
- The Madness In Me: Bucky has been brainwashed time and time again, which makes it hard for him to differentiate between what has really happened and what has been programmed into him. When his programming starts to deteriorate, he can become confused and is much more likely to lash out at anyone, regardless of whether they’re friend or foe.
- I'm Not Superhuman: Despite being Steve Rogers’ sidekick, essentially, Bucky does not have any super soldier serum in him. Which means that it takes him just as long to heal as a regular human would. He is susceptible to anything that would injure a human being, as well as illnesses, etc.
- Slipping Through the Cracks: There are times when his programming seems to slip a little. This most often happens when he’s in a place or with someone that he knew before he was the Winter Soldier. For example, the couple of missions he was sent on in America did not end well and his handlers do not send him anywhere in the United States alone. He got confused and missed his extraction point the last time it happened.
- Speakin' My Mind Today: There are times when the Winter Soldier will question his orders if he does not understand them. They tried to make him into the perfect machine, but he still has moments of self-awareness that manifest themselves occasionally. This generally ends up getting him in trouble with his handlers, as well.
- I Keep It Caged, But I Can't Control It: He is, essentially, a weapon. He is not treated as a human being, and as such, he does not really have a sense of free will. He is given orders and he carries them out, regardless of how he might feel about them.
- I Hate What I've Become: Sometimes, the Winter Soldier will have moments where he feels an incredible sense of guilt, and he’s not entirely certain why. Whenever this happens, it tends to be a signal to his handlers that he needs to be reprogrammed, which is why he’s taken to dealing with these episodes on his own rather than telling the people in charge.
- I Want Out: The Winter Soldier does not like small, enclosed spaces. When he’s on a mission, he can usually focus on what he’s doing enough to mostly tune this out, but there are definitely times when it’s harder than others. He wouldn’t really think to put the word “claustrophobia” to what he feels because that would be considered a weakness and he's punished for those, but that's definitely what it is.
- A Hero'll Save Me: He may not know the man right now, but Steve Rogers is one of the Winter Soldier’s greatest weaknesses. They were friends before Steve became Captain America, and they were partners since Bucky was sixteen. When he realizes what has happened to him, it will be even easier for people to use his admiration for Steve Rogers against him.
Miscellaneous: The motorcycle that he usually rides is an Indian.
