History / Bio:
Steve Rogers was born July 4, 1920. He grew up in a poor family and suffered from many illnesses that kept him frail and sickly. These included astigmatism, scoliosis, and arrhythmia, heart palpitations, and high blood pressure. He was partially deaf and suffered from severe stomach ulcers and pernicious anemia. As a child he contracted scarlet fever and rheumatic fever. On top of all of this, he had asthma, which in the 30's and 40's was viewed as a psychosomatic condition. There was no treatment, as doctors believed it was all in the patient's head. Because of this, Steve would have been viewed as both physically frail and mentally ill.
Steve should have died. By all accounts, he never should have lived to adulthood with all of these medical complications. However, his mother, Sarah, was a nurse and did everything she could to take care of Steve when he was ill. Steve's father was in the army and Steve grew up listening to his stories. Steve's father was his hero and in many ways shaped the man he would become. Unfortunately, he died when Steve was still a young boy. After his death Steve and his mother moved to Camp LeHigh where she worked as a nurse.
On the army base, Steve's dream dream to join the army and make a difference in the world only grew. When he was able, he'd hang around the base and talk to soldiers and learn everything he could. When he was bedridden, he would read everything he could find on military history, war tactics, and global politics. When he was roughly 14 he befriended a younger boy by the name of Bucky Barnes. Bucky was probably everything Steve had ever wanted to be-- gifted and the perfect candidate for the US Army. Bucky would often come visit Steve while he was stuck in bed and Steve grew to really treasure their friendship.
Steve's mother died of pneumonia when he was 18. By then Steve was making money selling illustrations to newspapers and trying to afford his many medications. Horrified by everything that was happening around the world, Steve tried to enlist in the army again and again, only to be rejected because of his frailty and sicknesses. One fateful day in 1941 Steve's earnest plea to be considered for the Army was overheard by General Chester Philips, who offered Steve a part in a top secret performance-enhancing experiment called Operation Rebirth.
In a lab in DC, Steve met Dr. Erskine and, after weeks of tests, was given the Super-Soldier Serum and bombarded with vita-rays. When he emerged from the vita-ray chamber, his body was completely transformed. The serum had made him into a perfect specimen of what the human body should be. Only minutes after the experiment was deemed a success, a Nazi spy murdered Dr. Erskine. With Dr. Erskine's death, no more serum could be created. Steve would be the only Super Soldier born from a project that had hoped to create thousands.
Steve was immediately ushered into physical and tactical training. Just three months after his transformation he was given his first mission in the war. To play up the propaganda, Steve was also given a red, white, and blue uniform and the title of Captain America, making "Cap" not only America's most effective special operative but a symbol of freedom in much of its war propaganda. Soon almost everyone in the world knew who Captain America was.
For the propaganda, Steve was teamed up with Bucky Barnes, who was portrayed as Steve's sidekick. Steve preferred to think of them as a team and highly valued his skills and companionship. Over the next four years Bucky was his 'sidekick' for almost every adventure and challenge he faced. Many times they also joined up with other super-powered heroes, often enough to be known as "The Invaders." While Steve did go into battle against fascist Germans and Imperial Japanese, his unit was more often pitted against super-powered psychopaths. His greatest enemies came to be Baron Zemo and The Red Skull. These two men were the antithesis of everything Steve stood for and many times Steve was called to stop them from executing increasingly deadly, world-ending schemes.
Steve and Bucky were attempting to stop one of these schemes in April of 1945 when everything came to a catastrophic end. Zemo had loaded a bomb with enough power to level a city onto a plane and it was on a crash course to a destination that would have completely turned the tide of the war. The two reached the plane just before it took off. While Bucky was scrambling to defuse the bomb, Steve took the controls and attempted to change its course. The huge bomb had been a trick, however, and Zemo had wanted to kill the heroes and change the war in a completely different way. The plane exploded mid-air. Steve was hurled into the freezing North Atlantic and presumed dead.
Decades passed. Because of his super-soldier serum, Steve remained alive in a type of suspended animation. Over 50 years after he disappeared, Steve was found in the ice by Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne, members of the still newly-formed Avengers. When Steve woke up, his first frantic thoughts were for Bucky as the last moments of their final mission surfaced in his mind almost instantly. Once he calmed down, Steve learned what had happened. Bucky had been killed... and decades had passed. He was in shock to learn how much time had passed. He had lost everyone and the world had changed in so many terrifying and amazing ways.
SHIELD wanted him. The Avengers wanted him. There was also the choice to attempt to blend back into the world as a civilian and put his Captain America role behind him for good. However, at this point Captain America was the only part of his identity he could be sure of. It took time for Steve to make up his mind, but in the end he chose to join the Avengers. Now Steve has become the team's leader, and in many ways he is its conscience as well.

Weaknesses:
Miscellaneous: Steve once earned a living as an illustrator and still loves to draw.
Sample:
Steve took the train into Brooklyn. He was dressed as a civilian in an attempt to blend in, though anyone who saw him would probably think he was either heading to church or a court appointment with his pressed slacks, blue button-up shirt, and combed hair. While the train rattled down the track, Steve sat with his hands in his lap and studied the people around him. Some people were reading books but the vast majority of them were staring at their phones. Many had these little plugs in their ears that played music. The body language was clear: nobody wanted to talk to anybody else. Steve may as well have been riding in an empty car.
He got off a few stops from the street he grew up on and walked the rest of the way. Now and then a building would look familiar but the store inside was completely changed. There were cars everywhere, trash in the gutters, and graffiti here and there on the walls. Looking around, Steve tried to feel like he was coming home but instead he just felt... empty.
He should not have been surprised to see that the building he grew up in had been demolished. A Starbucks Coffee Shop and a deli stood in its place. Steve stood on the curb across the street with his hands deep in his pockets and looked around, searching for anything to ground him. After a few minutes Steve turned and began walking again with no real destination in mind. Perhaps he would visit Camp LeHigh... though someone with SHIELD had already mentioned that it had closed years ago. There was a file on it back in his room waiting for him with all the other files-- folders with all the answers of what had become of all his old friends. Steve couldn't bring himself to look at them. Not yet.
When Steve looked up again he had wandered into Prospect Park... and at the center stood a huge 15 foot sculpture of Captain America, his shield thrust up into the air in victory. On its pedestal was an engraving that read "I'm just a kid from Brooklyn" HOMETOWN PRIDE Est 1941 Celebrating 50 Heroic Years. Looking up at his own image, Cap gathered that it must have been commemorated on what would have been his 50th birthday. That was years ago, but the statue seemed well cared for.
Steve had not known what he was looking for when he got on the train to Brooklyn but... this was the sign he needed. "I'm just a kid from Brooklyn," he said softly under his breath. He was still Steve Rogers. No matter what, he was still Steve Rogers. He'd left Brooklyn to help people and that wasn't going to change now.
Steve fished the tiny cellular phone out of his pocket. Hank had tried to explain how it worked but Steve was still getting used to it. After fumbling through a few screens, he managed to find Jan's name and dialed. "Miss Van Dyne? ... I think I'm ready to look at those uniform designs now."

Now Steve has become the team's leader, and in many ways he is its conscience as well.
Strengths / Abilities / Powers:
- Super Soldier Serum: The serum transformed Steve into the "perfect specimen of human conditioning and development." As a result, Steve possesses peak human intelligence, strength, speed, stamina, agility, reflexes, and durability. This also gives him above-average healing, allowing him to better recover from injury and resist the effects of drugs and toxins. The serum not only corrected all the childhood illnesses he struggled with, but gave him a perfect immune system, which makes it virtually impossible for him to become ill. The serum also improved Steve's mind, giving him a near-photogenic memory.
- Trained Soldier: Steve was trained by the United States military to make him their greatest soldier in the field. He is an expert on hand-to-hand fighting and is proficient in many weapons, from small knives to anti-tank guns. Even though he was sleeping for the past few decades, it has not taken him long to catch up on the weapons used by contemporary soldiers. That said, Steve would prefer to fight without a gun and rarely goes into battle with anything more than his shield and his fists. He is an expert marksman, strategist, and tactician.
- Indomitable Will: Steve is extremely strong-willed. Because of this, he is able to overcome most forms of temptation and mind control. While Steve's mind is enhanced by the serum, much of this strength comes from Steve's innate character. He was shaped into a fighter by the various illnesses he had and refused to give up even when he was close to death. He's stubborn and firmly holds onto his convictions.
- Hero at Heart: The heart of Captain America is indeed Steve Rogers. Steve was a good man long before he met Dr. Erskine, and that has not changed. He is righteous and brave and always tries to see the good in people. He has devoted himself to protecting the weak and defending freedom and justice. He will always try to do the right thing.
- The Shield: Steve's shield was made by Howard Stark and is made of Vibranium. It is not only a symbol for freedom but his primary weapon. He uses it to protect himself but it also able to use it against enemies by throwing it. He is able to calculate the angles to manipulate its trajectory and take out multiple targets at once. After Steve was taken out of the ice, Henry Pym modified Steve's arm brace with an electro-magnet, thus enabling Steve to call the Shield back to him across small distances.
Weaknesses:
- Man out of Time: Cap frequently struggles to make connections with the people he meets in this century. Life as he knew it is over, and he is still mourning that loss. He also is very aware of how his image has been idealized over time and feels the weight of that expectation on his shoulders. He wonders if there is a place for him in this time
- PTSD: Steve was in the thick of WWII for nearly five years. He saw all the horrors that came along with that. He saw men die, men he knew well and men he didn't, and he remembers all of them. History wants to remember him as a shining beacon of hope, but he was in the trenches with the men, risking his life right beside them. The death that haunts him the most, the death he blames himself for, is of course the death of Bucky Barnes. Because of all of these, Steve often has nightmares and difficultly sleeping.
- Anti-Serum: It is theorized that the Super-Soldier-Serum's effects could be reversed, thereby returning Steve to his pre-serum form or even accelerate his body into old age. The secrets of Erskine's serum were never fully unlocked or documented and it is very possible it could even cease to work inside Steve's body or have additional side effects that have yet to be seen.
- Hero at Heart: Steve believes in the best of people and will give people second chances and the benefit of the doubt, which sometimes puts Steve at risk. He will never run from a fight and will always do what he believes is right, no matter the risk to himself.
- Still Human: Steve is the perfect human specimen, but his abilities still lay within human possibility. He does not have super powers of any kind.
Miscellaneous: Steve once earned a living as an illustrator and still loves to draw.
