History / Bio:
Loki was raised in Asgard as son to Odin and Frigga and brother to Thor, but was really the son of Laufey (ruler of the Frost Giants and all of Jotunheim). He had been left to die by the Frost Giants, but Odin spared him, took him back to Asgard, and used sorcery to alter his appearance. Loki grew up believing he was Odin's biological son and always felt second to Thor in every way except for wit and cunning. He had no interest in training to be a warrior (because he could never compare to Thor in that area) and so Frigga taught him everything she knew about sorcery, which he embraced and eventually mastered.
When it became clear that Odin would make Thor king despite Thor being a slow-witted spoiled child, Loki began to scheme and strive for greatness in a different way: by having Thor banished. Loki allowed the Frost Giants into Asgard, knowing his fool brother would want to retaliate. It worked; Thor was banished, but while in Jotunheim, the magic around Loki wavered and he saw himself for what he truly was-- a Frost Giant. Later he confronted Odin and learned the truth. This knowledge only fueled Loki's hate for Odin and Thor and his lust for power and the throne. So, when Odin fell into the Odinsleep, Loki took the throne and sent the Destroyer to earth to kill Thor. Then he struck a bargain with Laufey-- the Frost Giant would kill Odin while he slept and take the Casket of Ancient Winters and Loki would be free to rule Asgard as king. However, just as Laufey was about to kill Odin, Loki killed the Frost Giant to appear the hero. Next, Loki planned to destroy Jotunheim completely so no one would discover the truth about his origins, but Thor foiled his plans by destroying the Bifrost. After their battle, Loki fell from the Bifrost and into the abyss, seemingly lost forever.
Loki fell through a wormhole and wandered through many worlds beyond the nine realms. Eventually, he surfaced again in Midgard. He heard rumors of a giant green monster and sought out Bruce Banner. He found the man living in secret in the far north, alone. Loki began to use his tricks to toy with Banner's mind-- eventually convincing the man that Thor was coming to kill him. The Hulk responded to the perceived threat and went on a rampage to find Thor first. He ended up in Harlem, New York.
As Loki predicted, Heimdall alerted Thor to the monster's activities and Thor took the bait. Battle waged between the Hulk and Thor and the city suffered for it. Eventually more 'Heroes' arrived on the scene to fight the Hulk and Loki's plans were ruined, yet again. In this defeat, Thor learned that Loki was still alive and had not died after falling from the Bifrost.
Loki went into hiding on Earth and his biding his time as he moves the chess pieces into place for his next scheme... one that will bring Midgard to its knees once and for all.
Strengths / Abilities / Powers:
- Frost Giant Anatomy: Loki possesses the physical abilities of the Frost Giants: superhuman endurance, strength, durability, and longevity, and immunity to the damaging touch of other Frost Giants. He also has the gift of Cryokinesis (can manipulate ice).
- Sorcery: Loki learned to wield magic from Frigga and is a very advanced sorcerer. These abilities include making illusionary copies of himself and others, disguising himself in appearance and voice, hypnosis, teleportation, invisibility, and telekinesis.
- Master Manipulator: Loki uses his magic and wit to manipulate others into doing what he wants. He takes great joy in playing with people in this way.
- Fighting Skills: While fighting wasnt Loki's favorite subject growing up, he was nonetheless a prince of Asgard and learned fighting skills. He is seen taking down a number of Dark Elves with only a knife and fighting Frost Giants alongside the Asgardians.
- Gifted Intelligence: Loki's usually a few steps ahead of everyone else as far as plotting and scheming goes. He can sometimes fall for the same tricks he enjoys playing on others.
Weaknesses:
- Narcissist: Loki is often selfish, manipulative, bitter, resentful, arrogant, deceitful, greedy, egomanical, and slightly bloodthirsty (thank you, villains.wikia.com). Much of this behavior is born from a life lived in Thor's shadow, always trying to be better, and then ultimately learning that his entire life was a lie. His ego makes him his own worst enemy.
- Thor: As much as Loki detests his 'brother' Thor, Loki does seem to now and then show some fondness for him. When they were children, they were friends. Loki has not completely forgotten that. This Love/Hate Loki has for Thor is what often brings Loki to the brink of madness.
- No Allies: Loki cannot be trusted by anyone. He will form brief alliances and bargains with different people, but he has no qualms with betraying them if it suits his own gain. Therefor his work is mostly solitary and completely self-serving.
- Combat: Loki prefers to win by using manipulation and trickery rather than brute force simply because he knows where his strengths lie. Other Asgardians, particularly Thor, are much stronger than Loki. He would not win in a fair fight, so he has to play dirty.
- Revenge: Loki's lust for revenge has brought him to the edge of madness. He will risk everything to get it.
Sample:
Loki was dressed smartly in slacks and a gray sweater that made his eyes look like emeralds. His hair was slicked back and he had a messenger bag over his arm and a coffee in his hand. Stepping up to the window, he handed the librarian his card. She gave him a shy smile and handed him a stack of old books. Loki flashed her a confident smile and strode away to find a place to sit.
The New York Public Library was a most useful distraction. Loki had read many books while hiding in plain sight, for a library certainly the last place the likes of Thor or Tony Stark would ever visit. His favorite were doubtless the books about himself. The old Norse myths were so amusing they often moved him to fits of laughter, earning him sullen glares from the graduate students toiling away in the reading room around him.
“Numbered among the Aesir is he whom some call the mischief monger of the Aesir, and the father of falsehoods, and blemish of all gods and men: he is named Loki," the books said. “Loki is beautiful and comely to look upon, evil in spirit, very fickle in habit. He surpassed other men in that wisdom which is called 'slight' and had artifices for all occasions..."
Oh, the men of old were poets, to be sure. Loki couldn't help but feel a certain sense of pride. How had they seen this so clearly? Yes, they also said he gave birth to monsters and brought about the end of the world... but Loki was young. There was plenty of time to destroy the world and bring forth hideous creatures. And why not? He was Loki, 'the father of falsehoods.' If he wanted to create such a thing, be it eight-leged horse or giant serpent, it was well within his power.
Still... sending a monster for Thor to battle was a bit too black and white for Loki's taste. He sipped his coffee and unfolded his paper, paging through, his sharp green eyes moving from column to column. Midgard was much more interesting than he had first given credit. It was teeming with powerful creatures. There were beings born with incredible powers and those who had given themselves power by means of science and magic. Any number of them could be set upon Thor to Loki's amusement, not to even mention those currently lurking at the edges of the cosmos.
The pieces were all there, laid bare before him. He need only push them into place.
